I am a huge Harry Potter fan, I have lost count how many times I have watched the films! When I heard that a local venue had transformed their afternoon tea into ‘The Assembly House and the Philosopher’s Scones’ – a magical Harry Potter themed afternoon tea, I HAD to go! I recently celebrated my 30th birthday and my engagement (you can read all about my birthday here and my engagement here) and my best friend bought me and my fiancé a voucher for afternoon tea at the Assembly House Norwich. I called to book a table in hope that I could redeem our voucher against the Harry Potter afternoon tea….and I could!!! Of course I took pictures and just had to share the experience with you guys!
On Arrival
The Assembly House is a beautiful venue in Norwich City centre, the grounds are stunning and so is the building. We were unable to sit in the main restaurant as that was fully booked but we managed to book a table in their front room which I believe was called the ivy room. Unfortunately this room was not decorated up for the Harry Potter afternoon tea like the main restaurant was but it was still a lovely setting and the Harry Potter music was playing in the background which set the mood perfectly.
We were given a menu so we knew what to expect and a very extensive tea menu…I went for the boring yet classic English breakfast and Shah chose to have a coffee. Dietary requirements passed on to the waitress, we waited in anticipation!
The Food
Out came the stand with our food stacked high, unfortunately we did have to send it back as we had requested no pork and there were ham sandwiches! Not an issue, it was quickly replaced with a fresh stand and we were very excited to get stuck in! On the first layer there were egg and smoked salmon sandwiches that were delicious and we could keep asking for more of these which was a bonus! The second layer had small but very tasty 3 cheese toasties and a brioche roll filled with chicken and avocado. So far so good!
After finishing the sandwiches we were presented with scones, a cheese and chive savoury scone with butter and a fruit scone with glittery strawberry jam and clotted cream! We bought the sweet scones home as there were a lot of sweet treats that we wanted to get through!
The final layer was the star of the show! A chocolate wand, a mini trifle with popping candy, a layered cake and….wait for it….a sorting hat cake. Breaking into the sorting hat cake was so exciting yet very nerve wracking….what house was it going to be? I was beyond happy that my cake was filled with a red cream…GRYFFINDOR…this made my day! (HP geek alert!) Shah got Hufflepuff…at least it wasn’t Slytherin hey!
The Verdict
This was such a lovely afternoon out. If you love Harry Potter you will love it, if you love cake and sandwiches, you will love it, it’s a win win! I can’t recommend this enough and if I had the chance I would 100% go again. The staff were very helpful and extremely friendly and the venue just topped it off. If you’re in Norwich and you fancy an afternoon out this is the place to go.
What house will choose you?

They do local festivals here for Harry Potter & it is great to see people come together like that. I would love to do a tea themed Harry Potter event! Although it would be Slytherin I long for my sorting hat to say.
